Author Studies for Primary Students (K-2)
1. Read a few selections from the author you are studying. Have discussions about the kind of books that author writes, style of illustrations, and other interesting facts about the author.
2. Choose something to draw. You can do a step-by-step drawing or leave it open ended.
3. Keep the author pages you do each week and bind them together in a My Book of Authors that students can take home at the end of the year.
Example #1:
Read a few Jan Brett books that have a hedgehog somewhere in them. She has a pet hedgehog and likes to include him in many of her books. Read Hedgie's Surprise as your last book. I use step by step directions from Jan Brett's website to draw Hedgie with the students. I draw on an overhead or Doc Cam and they draw along with me. Leave time for students to personalize their drawing with varied backgrounds, etc. I use this with second grade. JanBrett.pdf Example #2:
Read a few Robert Munsch books. Read Stephanie's Pony Tail last. Let the students design hair styles for the 4 bald heads on their paper. They love this one! I use this with first grade. RobertMunsch.pdf Example #3:
Read a few Eric Carle books. Read the Grouchy Ladybug last. I use the directions from a step by step drawing book to make a ladybug with the students. I use this with Kindergarten. EricCarle.pdf
You can spend as long as you want on an author. Because I have 45 minute library sessions I usually spend 1 or 2 weeks depending on the author and how many of their books I have in my collection. What the students draw or write on their page can vary to fit you and the grade level you are teaching.
